Reading the result
- Recipient receives is the only figure worth comparing. A provider can show a zero fee and still deliver less.
- Real rate you are getting spreads the fee across the transfer, so it is lower than the rate advertised. It is what you are actually paying per unit of currency.
- True total cost needs the mid-market rate. It adds the fee and the rate markup together — usually two or three times the fee alone.
- Run the same amount through every provider you are considering, on the same day, with the same payout method. Anything else compares two different purchases.
How it is worked out
recipient receives = (amount converted) × (rate offered)
true total cost = (total paid × mid-market rate − recipient receives) ÷ mid-market rate
